I first heard about Eddie Harris from Joe Satriani ( Joe's last album " Black Swans. . . " features a Eddie Harris like tribute tune ). I didn't know anything about Eddie. But I picked this up on a whim and fell in love with it. From " Born To Be Blue, " you get a slow blues with a touch of jazz funk. The tune takes you not to a sad pace but one of reflection. " Freedom Jazz Dance " is unique for it's groove and displacement of the bass riff. But it's danceable and funky at the same time. Eddie's tone is warm and not the kind of " shrill " sound you would get from some saxophonists, past their be-bop prime. Eddie is no Coltrane. But Harris knows how to groove. Think of this disc as " Kind Of Blue " with more soul and funk and you get Eddie Harris' " The In Sound. "
